AI-Empowered Employee

Increased productivity and better decisions

– AI enables the modern workplace

At Continental, Artificial Intelligence cannot only be found in its products and services, but in many workplaces, everyday tasks, and overall business processes. AI enables us to automate repetitive duties and free up employees to spend more time with more creative, strategic, value-creating, and, ultimately, more rewarding tasks. AI technologies can help shorten the time needed for a specific process, provide vital support for better data-based decision making, mitigate risks in a hyper-complex environment and open up new business opportunities for both us as well as our customers.

This “democratization” of Artificial Intelligence offers opportunities for all business areas and along the entire value chain, from complex R&D processes to efficient production operations. We are convinced that, if we keep introducing and using AI technologies responsibly, sustainably, and deliberately, they will change our workplaces for the better.

The novel technologies and methodologies evolving from the space of Artificial Intelligence and data enable us to elevate the quality of our business-related and R&D processes to the next level.”

Enable AI: Providing the Right Framework for the AI-Empowered Company

The first step of becoming an AI-empowered company is to lay the necessary foundations for implementing Artificial Intelligence technologies in our processes. This includes topics like big data, performant hardware, and software infrastructures as well as AI ethics. But it also means to work closely with internal stakeholders on offering internal trainings about all things AI that enable our employees for the workplace of the future.

Our own Code of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence, first published in 2020, ensures that we use AI responsibly to benefit our employees, partners, suppliers, customers, and society in general. It provides accountability across a vast range of topics, from fair working conditions to handling intellectual property.

We have established a central data portal that not only provides holistic data accessibility and availability across Continental that ensures compliance, quality, and re-usability of AI data. It also includes a big data layer.

AI Enterprise Applications: Providing the Tools for More Business Efficiency

A woman interacts with cutting-edge holographic technology, manipulating a vibrant virtual 3D interface with her hand in a colorful, illuminated digital environment.

AI is not just for software engineers. A large amount of business processes can be executed more efficiently through data and Artificial Intelligence. In future, AI-based solutions help us to

  • make healthy business decisions and mitigate risks in a timely manner,
  • improve the quality of our business decisions and results, and
  • increase the effectiveness of our process models.

Our employees use Generative AI solutions to assist them in their daily tasks. For example, our software-focused colleagues use AI for Code Generation, thereby speeding up the development of software. We use Forecast Algorithms to predict our inventory and optimize our demand. And we reduce the complexity in material handling by using AI for Multi-Source Component Management.

Especially our R&D experts benefit by the help of Artificial Intelligence. Their work needs to be flawless when it comes to safety and reliability – so all too often, their work consists of repetitive, but crucial tasks like tuning parameters, testing software, or clarify requirements.

AI tools help alleviate these sometimes arduous tasks while still offering them full control of the outcome. When consequently used, our R&D processes become more efficient, effective, focused and result in significantly better quality in our work products. Some examples of how we are using Artificial Intelligence in Research and Development:

AI Tuning

Several automotive applications require extensive tuning to find the optimal system parameters for a physical system. By turning expert knowledge and experience into data, we can teach AI how an expert does this important optimizing work and subsequently automate the tuning tasks.

AI for Requirements Engineering

A very direct result of using AI in R&D can also be felt by our customer: By using Artificial Intelligence to classify and compare customer requirements, we can reduce our manual effort and OEMs get a much faster response to their inquiry.

AI for Software Testing

Testing takes up a large amount of time when developing software e.g. for autonomous mobility. With the help of Artificial Intelligence, we want to intelligently explore and record the internal structure and state transitions of software – thereby lowering both preparation and maintenance effort and improve both traceability as well as time to delivery.
